Whether you’re travelling to a city for business or pleasure, the prospect of driving around can seem daunting if you’re not used to city driving.
Previously, we shared out tips on driving in the countryside, and for today’s post, we discuss driving in the city and our top tips to ensure a safe journey.
Plan Your Journey
Sometimes, driving during rush hour is unavoidable, but where this is the case, be sure to plan your journey. Rush hour times in London are typically between 7:30 am and 9:30 am and then again between 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm. If you are driving between these times, be sure to leave plenty of time to get to your destination.
Whether you’re driving in the city or elsewhere, pressure from other drivers that drive too close, or too fast up behind you can begin to build. Driving whilst under pressure provides greater room for error or making hasty decisions that aren’t safe. Whilst you can’t control the actions of other drivers on the road, you can control your own. Just remember, it is better to annoy someone behind you by driving within the speed limit than being fined for speeding or crashing into another motorist.
Keep Your Distance
It is common sense to keep your distance from the vehicle in front of you, no matter what location you are driving in. When driving in the city, however, there is arguably a stronger chance of coming to an abrupt halt as there are more vehicles on the road and more pedestrians and cyclists to look out for. Keep your distance and avoid a collision.
As you’ll likely be faced with a lot of stop-start driving when getting around in a city, it is best to keep your driving at a steady pace, rather than zooming off only to have to brake harshly. What’s more, driving at a steady pace is a lot more fuel-efficient.
Keep Your Cool
Sometimes you’ll be cut up and sometimes someone might beep their horn at you for something that wasn’t your fault. If you’re going to drive in the city, however, you’ll have to learn not to sweat the small stuff. As long as you can arrive at your destination knowing that you drove sensibly, with the safety of others also in mind, then you’ve done a good job.
