How To Prepare Your Car For An MOT

1 – Check Brake Fluid

Checking your brake fluid is a quick and easy way to keep your car in good condition. You can check your brake fluid by looking under the bonnet and locating the master cylinder. You should see ‘min’ and max’ markings on the cylinder – the brake fluid should be somewhere between those markings. 

If your brake fluid needs a top-up you can easily do this yourself, with brake fluid being easily obtainable from any local auto shop. 

2 – Check Mirrors 

Another quick check you can carry out is to inspect all of your car’s mirrors. You will need to take a look at the interior and exterior mirrors, making sure that they are all intact. 

You should make sure that all of the mirrors on your car are not cracked or damaged in any way, and that they provide clear visibility of your surroundings.

3 – Check All Warning Lights

An easy indicator that your car is in need of some attention is when the lights appear on your dashboard. There are multiple lights that all mean different things; you can check your car’s handbook to check what each light means. 

It is always a good idea to pay attention to the lights that appear on your dashboard. You may be tempted to ignore them, but getting your car seen as soon as possible will prevent a minor problem from becoming a major issue.

4 – Check Your Car Has Enough Oil

Checking a car’s oil level is one of the first things a garage will do when carrying out an MOT, so it is worthwhile taking a look yourself before sending your car in. You can do this by locating the dipstick beneath the bonnet and removing it, wiping away any excess oil.

You should then dip the dipstick back in the oil so you can get a reading on how far up the oil level goes. Similarly to the brake fluid, you should see ‘min’ and ‘max’ indicators. If your oil level does not sit between the two points, then you know the oil needs to be refilled. Fortunately, this is cheap, quick and easy to do yourself.
